IN CLOSING

On This Day In Unitarian Universalist History
by Frank Schulman.  This book provides the background for the comments below.

Sept 28th in

1746
John Disney became the second Unitarian preacher at the Essex Street Chapel, London, England in 1782.  In 1783, he became the Senior Minister.   A leading scholar of his day, Disney worked for repeal of all laws restricting liberty of conscience, when Unitarianism was not legal in England.  Disney left the ministry for greener pastures, due to the inheritance of an Estate.  He stayed politically active as a nobleman, fighting for the rights of conscience and to legitimize his church.  The law granting legal status to Unitarians, was passed in 1814.    Disney died on Dec. 26, 1816.

1887
Clinton Lee Scott, who your minister likes to quote, was born near Newport, Vermont. He became a minister and served congregations in Northfield VT, Buffalo, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Atlanta GA, Prioria, IL, Dayton and El Dorado, OH, Gloucester, MA and Tarpon Springs, FL, before becoming a leading light in the Universalist church, holding many high level denominational positions with distinction and was a well known and respected author.   In 1977, at the UUA General Assembly in Ithaca, NY, presented him with the Award for Distinguished Service to the Cause of Liberal Religion.  Scott died on this date in 1985, at the age of 98.

1891
Herman Melville, a Unitarian and the author of the famous book: Moby Dick, died at age 72.
